스리랑카에서 운전하기 Ceylon AA Driving in Sri Lanka as a foreigner

스리랑카에서 자가 운전은 쉽지 않아요. 외국인들은 대부분 기사를 고용해요. 

여기저기서 끼어드는 툭툭에 오토바이에 자전거에, 중앙선을 넘나들며 추월하는 버스와 트럭까지 잠시도 눈을 쉬지 못해요. 늘 360도 경계를 해야 해요. 게다가 밤에는 다들 쌍라이트를 켜고 다녀서 더 안보이고(가로등이 잘 없어요) 어둠 속에 동화가 되는 스리랑카 사람들은 정말 주의깊게 봐야 보입니다. 

근데 우리는 직접 운전을 했어요. 이곳 저곳 다 돌아보고 싶었고, 스리랑카에 살려면 결국 어느 시점에는 직접 운전해야 편할 것 같아서요. 

한국에서 국제 면허증을 발급받아 갔지만 스리랑카 에서 다시 International Driving Permit 이라는 스리랑카 버젼을 받아야 한다고 하길래, 또 며칠 운전하고 말 게 아니라서 혹시 사고나 위반 시 골치아플까봐 현지인이 추천하는 대로 아래와 같이 IDP를 받았어요. 

콜롬보 3 에 있는 Celyon AA (ceylon automotive association 라마다 호텔 옆) 에서 받으면 되요, 받는 데는 뭐 한 30분 정도 걸렸어요. 돈 내고 사진 내고 한국 면허증 및 국제 면허증 보여주면 됩니다. 

It's not easy to drive in Sri Lanka as a foreigner. So most of the foreigners hire drivers. 

You can't rest your eyes as there will be Tuktuks, motorbikes, bycicles cutting in. And it gets worse in the night. You have to be very careful as all the cars are using double light (no streetlights), and people are crossing the roads.

We drove by ourselves against all odds. Because if I'm gonna live in the country then eventually I'll have to drive at some point. 

I brought international license (Korean version) but local people recommended to get International Driving permit in Sri Lankan version (means to pay and get it localize) , I got it done in Ceylon AA, which is near Ramada Hotel in Colombo 03, it took me 30 mins to get it. Pay about 3600 rupees and you need your license, international license and a passport size photo...they do have photo shop there so don't worry even if you don't have your photo with you.  .
